The Constituent Assembly officially adopted the Indian Constitution today, November 26, 1949. India turned as a republic when the Constitution went into force on January 26, 1950.

The Constituent Assembly began in December 1946. This was a key moment for getting constitutional approval. Leading the Assembly, with 389 members, was Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Among notable guests were Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Sardar Patel, and Jawahralal Nehru. Draughting the Constitution fell to a panel under the direction of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. After a long debate lasting two years, eleven months, and eighteen days, the proposal was approved on November 26, 1949.

One cannot hyperbolicize the importance of this enormous work. The Constitution’s features shaped the young country. They greatly influenced the growth of the world’s largest democracy.
