On the occasion of the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Kargil War Memorial in Drass to pay homage to the 545 soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty during Operation Vijay. The visit took place around 9:20 AM.
After paying his homage, the Prime Minister also interacted with Veer Naris (war widows) and commemorated their sacrifices. During the visit, PM Modi virtually carried out the first blast of the Shinkun La Tunnel Project. This project, which is crucial for improving connectivity to Leh, will consist of a 4.1-km-long twin-tube tunnel constructed at an altitude of approximately 15,800 feet on the Nimu-Padum-Darcha road.

The Kargil War Memorial was abuzz with preparations ahead of PM Modi’s visit, marking 25 years since the Kargil war. The memorial honors the courage and sacrifice of our brave soldiers. They defended our nation during tough times.
PM Modi highlighted the importance of this day, saying, “Tomorrow, 26th July, is a very special day for every Indian.” We will mark the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas. It is a day to pay homage to all those who protect our nation. I will visit the Kargil War Memorial and pay tributes to our brave heroes. Work will also commence for the Shinkun La Tunnel Project. This project is important to improve connectivity to Leh, especially during bad weather”.
Kargil Vijay Diwas reminds us of our military’s dedication. They work hard to protect our country’s sovereignty. We respect their memory today and say thank you to these brave soldiers who stood tall in the face of danger.
The Shinkun La Tunnel is coming along well. Nearly 40% of the tunneling work is done, and it’s ahead of schedule. The project should be running by late 2027. It will improve year-round travel between Leh and Himachal Pradesh. To mark the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Ministry of Defence will create a digital archive for Operation Vijay. This archive will include declassified documents, soldier memoirs, and interactive exhibits. A new program called “Shaurya Yatra” is launching in schools across India. It aims to teach students about the sacrifices made during the Kargil War. This way, the legacy of the brave soldiers will inspire future generations.
