

An Air India Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner, operating Flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed just minutes after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft, registered VT‑ANB, departed runway 23 at approximately 1:39 PM IST and climbed to around 625 feet before descending rapidly and losing radar contact at a vertical rate of roughly –475 feet per minute.
The plane carried 242 occupants in total—232 passengers and 12 crew members, including Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kundar. A MAYDAY call was made shortly after takeoff, but no further communication was received.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing explosions and seeing a plume of thick, black smoke rising from the Meghani Nagar residential neighborhood near the airport perimeter. Emergency services—including seven fire engines, ambulances, and multiple NDRF teams—quickly responded, sealing off roads and securing the crash site.
While official statements on casualties remain unconfirmed, preliminary assessments suggest there could be up to 50 fatalities, with numerous injuries likely. Air India, its parent Tata Group, and India’s aviation authorities have set up emergency response centers to assist affected families and support rescue operations.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu have reportedly been in contact with Gujarat officials and are personally overseeing the rescue efforts. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and a technical investigation team have initiated formal inquiries into the cause of the crash.
