On December 4, 2024, a man attacked Sukhbir Badal. He is the former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab and a leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The attack took place at the entrance to the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

The attack was a shocking moment. At the time of the attack, Sukhbir Badal was being punished for his religion. He was in a wheelchair and wore a blue “sewadar” outfit.

The assailant, Narain Singh Chaura, ex-Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), was overpowered by the people present on the spot and taken into custody by the police. Luckily for Sukhbir Badal, the bullet hit a wall, without causing him any harm.

The attack happened while he was doing penance. He was following orders from the Akal Takht. During this time, he cleaned and did selfless work at the temple. This was for his religious misconduct from 2007 to 2017. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.

Shiromani Akali Dal leaders have criticized the attack, terming it a conspiracy to unsettle Punjab. Temple officials acted quickly, and thanks to the security staff, the situation was soon under control.

This incident has sparked questions about security measures and the motives behind the attack. The case is being investigated. Authorities are trying hard to grasp the context and impact of this troubling incident.

After the attack on Sukhbir Singh Badal at the Golden Temple on December 4, 2024, the Punjab Police filed a chargesheet in February 2025. The accused is Narain Singh Chaura. The 68-year-old ex-Khalistani militant faces several charges. These include violations of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Investigations revealed that the weapon used was linked to a 2010 criminal case. In March 2025, an Amritsar court granted Chaura bail. This move drew criticism from SAD leaders. They claimed the police downplayed the incident in the FIR to make the attack seem unplanned. Authorities found that Chaura was frustrated by unresolved sacrilege cases from Badal’s time. The probe now includes another suspect, Dharam Singh. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has stayed his arrest while further investigation takes place. The case remains active, with ongoing scrutiny over security lapses and legal proceedings.
