A Durga Puja procession in Cuttack erupted into violence on Sunday night, prompting authorities to impose a 36-hour curfew in several parts of the city. The unrest reportedly began when a motorcycle rally organized by supporters of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) entered sensitive areas, defying police directives. Protesters allegedly pelted stones at law enforcement personnel, who responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd. The clashes resulted in injuries to more than a dozen police officers, damage to vehicles and shops, and widespread disruption across the city.
Authorities acted swiftly to contain the situation, deploying over 60 platoons of police and central armed forces. Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner S. Dev Dutta Singh announced the curfew, effective from 10 PM on Sunday, covering 13 police station areas. Internet services were suspended to prevent the spread of rumors and maintain law and order.

Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence, and three First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed. Investigations are ongoing as police continue to identify and apprehend other suspects. Officials have reported that the situation is now largely under control, with no new incidents of violence.
The curfew has significantly affected daily life in Cuttack, with residents facing challenges in accessing essential services. Emergency operations continue, but hospitals such as SCB Medical College and Hospital have reported difficulties in accommodating patients from other parts of Odisha due to restrictions. Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement to ensure stability and peace in the city.
