National Conference President Farooq Abdullah singing a famous devotional bhajan ‘Tune Mujhe Bulaya Sherawaliye‘, surprised devotees at the ashram in Katra. The former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister accompanied a group of devotees and chanted the popular Mata Vaishno Devi song with much gusto.

Standing in a traditional red scarf, Farooq Abdullah was handed a microphone by an existing singer on stage and surprised many in attendance by energetically launching into the lyrics to the popular Bollywood tune, “Main Aaya, Main Aaya Sherawaliye“.

His impromptu show, which was a part of a religious event being held at the base camp for the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, went viral within no time and caught people’s attention and praise across the nation.

At the event, Farooq Abdullah also took the opportunity to express solidarity with residents of Katra who are protesting against a recently announced ropeway project by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.

Farooq Abdullah speaking to the gathering said such projects should be considered keeping in view the interests of local people. “Those who are in charge of running the shrine should not do things that will hurt or create difficulty for the local population,” he said. Abdullah’s statement against the construction of the ropeway was a positive development heard by the protestors.

Many of them depend, for their bread and butter, on the blessings of Mata Vaishno Devi, Farooq Abdullah added. He finished by declaring, “When the power of God prevails, everything else fades into nothingness,” the same deep spiritual connection that many feel for the shrine to the venerated figure.

The ropeway project, which will connect the Tarakote Marg to Sanji Chhat, will also enable devotees to avoid a 13-km trek, but comes amid opposing campaigns blaming each other in allegations about the potential impact on locals’ livelihoods and aligned communities in the possible disruption of traditional routes.

Abdullah’s vocal support and heartfelt bhajan performance have not only brought attention to the protest but have also reiterated the power of community solidarity and faith.
